About Piano Lessons

Piano lessons are Monday through Friday, including morning, afternoon and evening lesson times.

Note:  Lessons are currently Online!  While I have been providing private piano lessons in my home, located in Cameron Park near the Goldorado (Bel Air) Center, I'm now offering online lessons with the same curriculum and learning experiences. This has created an opportunity for the same quality lesson with many fewer absences due to illness or travel issues. In addition, you no longer need to be within easy driving distance.

Lessons are forty-five minutes once each week. There is flexibility in the structure of the lessons:

Most students follow a full curriculum, including piano performance and repertoire building, technique, music rudiments and theory, and ear training. A wide variety of musical styles is included. These students typically perform in two recitals each year. Participation in the Music Teachers' Association of California Certificate of Merit TM program is available for interested students, and is a wonderful way to guide steady progress.  (Visit mtac.org for more information.)

For some students (typically some adults wishing to return to playing) the approach is more recreational, with less emphasis on theory and ear training, and more on building the technical skill to play the student’s preferred genres. (Although following a full curriculum is certainly available to adults as well.)

For students following a complete piano curriculum, the weekly lesson time might be utilized as follows:

  • To review the previous lesson’s theory assignment
  • For the student to play current assignments
  • For us to discuss these pieces and decide whether to move on, or if not, what further work they need
  • To discuss and refine technique
  • To do ear training and/or sight-reading drills
  • To play through new material assigned for the coming week
  • To discuss the coming week’s theory assignment
